Questions to ask before settling on a hosted desktop service
6th July 2021
The hosted desktop industry has boomed over the past few years, in no small part due to a global pandemic that necessitated remote working for many. A digital revolution is underway, but it is still important to make sure your Desktop as a Service provider is right for you. Here are a few questions to ask before settling on a hosted desktop platform.
1. Do they have disaster recovery tools?
Cloud storage is highly versatile and more secure than traditional storage, but it is not invincible. An outage on either end is possible, or a file could be deleted by accident. Does your provider have the necessary tools to recover from an issue like this? Does it regularly conduct data image backups?
2. What security options do they have?
Our digital world has given rise to hackers and cybercrime. It may sound unlikely that this could target you or your business, but it is not a possibility you can ignore; plenty of hackers do it just to see if they can. Your data needs to be secured with the strongest encryption to make sure this does not happen.
3. What is their overall performance?
A simple question, but still an important one. With any virtual network, performance is key – you do not want to be lagging on your tasks due to a mediocre hosted service. This is why you should inquire about the infrastructure and servers behind the hosted desktop and if they use the best SSD storage.
4. What is your uptime?
Closely related to the above, a good Desktop as a Service will be available at any time. Of course, we can't entirely discount unexpected outages, but these should be minimal and never a result of shoddy infrastructure. Ask your prospective provider for their uptime, just to make sure they are up to scratch – and not just hopping on a trend.
