Are Hosted Desktops actually safe?
11th August 2021
Hosted desktops are an outsourced IT service that allows for added practicality, as emails, business data and Microsoft Office applications can be found all in one place for the first time. Whilst this means that you are no longer chained to a desk to be able to have the ability to work, it has stemmed safety concerns from some users. At Host My Office, we are here to quash these safety misconceptions with this short blog post.
How does a hosted desktop work?
Before we discuss the safety concerns surrounding a hosted desktop, it might put users at ease to understand how the tech works. Rather than opening up emails, data, and apps all in different places, a hosted desktop allows you to do so in one place, over the internet. This comes in place of using a hard drive. This has the added benefits of reducing storage space on your computer, meaning faster loading times. It also means that you do not have to make the costly investment in an external hard drive for added space.
Are our hosted desktops safe?
Now to answer the security question. When you agree to store your hosted desktop within a data centre, you have done so because they can provide several safety measures that aren’t feasible within your business headquarters. For example:
The security of datacentres:
You may feel a sense of uneasiness about a data centre distant from your company headquarters storing your hosted desktop. But we assure you that a datacentre is the ideal setting for many reasons:
- Your hosted desktop is kept safe by the levels of physical security surrounding it. For example, ID cards would be necessary to be able to get near where your data is kept, which would be an area watched both by a security guard and 24 hour CCTV.
- Datacentres have a vast number of anti-theft devices installed. For example, the use of fire or water to destroy your hosted desktop as a way of preserving its data if found under attack.
- There is also a level of digital protection surrounding your hosted desktop. For example, firewalls and encryption would be deployed by the data centre itself as a way of protecting your data from potential hackers.
- It may be a concern that because a hosted desktop is kept in a data centre independent of your business that the power may cut out. Yet, issues like this are impossible. There will always be a source of uninterruptable power. Whether this comes from a second generator or an onsite diesel generator, the outcome remains the same.
- Within a datacentre, data is kept safe due to storage on redundancy disks. This combines many different pieces of physical technology into one, virtually. Not only does this lead to added performance but it also makes for added security as your data will remain all in one place.
