3 DaaS mistakes beginners make and how to avoid them
18th August 2021
There can be no doubt that hosted desktops (Desktop as a Service (DaaS)) are here to stay and are rapidly becoming the go-to IT solution for office and remote workers alike. With more companies than ever before investing in DaaS for the first time or looking to increase their already existing hosted desktop service, it is important to look out for and avoid the most common mistakes.
Mistake 1: Do not undervalue the service
The thing that sets aside DaaS from, say, Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), is that DaaS is all about the service, whereas VDI leans more towards the software side of things. Even though DaaS use is increasing in stark contrast to VDI’s shrinking usage, each type is more suited to certain users than others. Professional IT workers who have used VDI often see DaaS as a threat to their position, and they may undervalue the service that DaaS provides.
Mistake 2: Do not assume all DaaS operators are equal
From the outside, one DaaS provider may look just like any other, however, delve beneath the surface and you will find that there can be several differences. You must do your due diligence when it comes to choosing a hosted desktop service. Vendors often differ in functionality and strategy from those provided by hyperscalers on the public cloud, only allowing customers to operate in that solitary cloud environment. On the flip side, those vendors offering DaaS via multi-cloud systems give companies much more flexibility via working across any number of public clouds.
Mistake 3: Neglecting the overall user experience
Making sure the overall user experience is a good one is obvious, but it is typically overlooked by beginners to DaaS. For example, a business may want to keep costs to a minimum, so they opt for a public cloud-based shared user system that allows different users the chance to share costs and resources. However, these cost-cutting measures can cause problems with the system's performance, which will frustrate the end-user. Companies new to DaaS should invest in tools that will monitor and measure the user experience and allow for positive adjustments when things go wrong.
