DaaS vs. IaaS: Which is the Right One For Your Business?

DaaS vs. IaaS: Which is the Right One For Your Business?

10th October 2022

The IT industry is changing rapidly and it seems like a new acronym is being added to the list every day.

Two of the latest acronyms on the scene are DaaS and IaaS, or Desktop as a Service and Infrastructure as a Service. Confused? Don't worry, we're here to break things down by explaining exactly what the key differences between them are, and crucially, which one is likely to be right for your business.

What is Desktop as a Service (DaaS)?

A DaaS solution can be thought of as a complete desktop environment, often including software such as Office Suite, Outlook, Adobe Creative Cloud and even antivirus protection. This type of service can be delivered on-premise or in the cloud, which means you have control over how your data is protected and where it resides.

The advantage of this type of service is that there's no need for expensive hardware upgrades or maintenance contracts because all updates are handled by the service provider.

What is Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)?

By contrast, Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is more about providing computer and storage resources in the cloud. With IaaS, you are responsible for installing and managing your own applications, which can be a challenge if you're not familiar with cloud technologies. However, this type of service can offer more flexibility when it comes to scaling up or down based on your needs.

So which one is right for you?

If you're looking for an easy way to get started with desktop computing in the cloud, DaaS might be a good option. But if you need more control over your environment or have existing applications that you want to move to the cloud, IaaS might be a better fit.
